EDWARD JOHN EYRE HIGH SCHOOL
|
There are three public secondary schools in
Whyalla; Edward John Eyre High School, Stuart High and Whyalla High.
Together they form the Whyalla Secondary College.
Edward John Eyre High School is the Senior Secondary Campus,
offering only subjects at Year 11 or 12 level.
These are the subjects necessary to achieve the South Australian
Certificate of Education (the SACE).
We are situated on spacious grounds in the
middle of the city and cater for adult and re-entry students as well as
continuing students from the two 8-10 campuses.
Edward John Eyre High School provides a supportive
study environment for all students and a wide range of courses to
suit individual needs. However, the
availability of the subjects offered is subject to adequate enrolment
numbers.
We offer an extensive range of student services,
including career counselling, personal counselling, help with study skills
and tutoring in individual subjects when staff
are available. We have a cafeteria which comfortably seats eighty
students
and offers a range of hot and cold foods.
Enrolment Procedures & Course Selection
For students transferring from Whyalla High
School or Stuart High School at the completion of Year 10, the main
enrolment/course selection process takes place
during Terms 3 and 4 prior to their transfer to this school. This
forms
part of the 10/11 Transition programme provided
by the three schools.
For Adult or Re-entry students enrolments are
made directly with this school. Students considering enrolment should
ring the school and make an appointment with
the Student Counsellor. There are two main enrolment periods.
Late
January-early February for full-year or Semester
1 courses and May-June for Semester 2. Enrolments will also be taken
in December for the following year.
For students already undertaking subjects at
this school the process for Course Counselling into the following year
or
semester will be advertised within the school.
Due to the complexities of SACE and the entry
requirements for post-school options, all students must go through the
appropriate Course Selection process before
being enrolled in a subject or changing from one subject to another.
Adult Students
This school is a designated Adult Re-entry
School. There is a common room available for use by adult students
-
‘Sturt’s Rest’ - and depending upon numbers
adult students are grouped into the same Roll Class. To be considered
as
an ‘Adult Student’ a number of DECS and SSABSA
criteria need to be met. Continuing students who turn 18 while still
at school do not meet this criteria.
In general a student needs to be re-entering school after an absence of
6 months (12
months for certain SSABSA requirements).
Computer Facilities
The school has an extensive range of computer
facilities that are networked across the school. Students are given
a
log-on ID and password which enables them
to save their work to the network. There are three rooms with computers
and a small number in the library. Internet
access is available in some areas.
Instrumental Music
Instrumental Music tuition is available for
students who are enrolled in a classroom music subject. The tuition
is provided
by teachers from the Instrumental Music section.
Generally this is provided face-to-face but in some instances may need
to be provided by Distance means. The
school has facilities to support this. Instrumental lessons will
be negotiated
between teachers and student but will not
always coincide with scheduled classroom music lessons.
